Myths and legends fascinate me, and the most well known have to be the greek myths. I chose Prometheus as my first Greek deity since he was the creator and benefactor of man. His name means "foresight" and Zeus, after the Titanomachy and becoming King of the Gods, asked him and his brother Epimetheus, "hindsight," to replenish the Earth with creatures and bestow them all with gifts. They were Titans, but because they had not joined in the fight against Zeus and the other Gods, were not punished with the rest. It is said that Prometheus had foreseen the outcome and so he and his brother declined to fight. Epimetheus worked on the animals while Prometheus formed man in the image of the gods, but Epimetheus in his enthusiasm bestowed all of the gifts among the beasts. Prometheus distressed, decided the only possible gift to give man was fire. The next morning as the sun god rode out, Prometheus stole some and brought it back to man, teaching them how to care for it and keep it burning. Zeus was angry with Prometheus since the gods were the only ones meant to have fire. Prometheus then appeased him, saying he would teach man how to make sacrifices to the gods, but again Prometheus looked after his creations, and tricked Zeus. He created two piles, one with the bones wrapped in juicy fat, and another where the meat was wrapped in the hide. And Zeus picked the bones. This angered Zeus further, and in retribution, gifted Epimetheus with Pandora as his wife, blessing her with curiosity. At every turn Zeus had tried to punish man for Prometheus' insubordination, but it was upon refusing to tell Zeus which of his children would dethrone him that he finally was punished. He was chained to an unmovable rock deep in the Caucasus Mountains with unbreakable chains. Each day an eagle would descend and rip out the Titan's liver before eating it in front of him. Each night Prometheus' liver would regrow, and the cycle would repeat. He only finally found freedom when Heracles needed his help with his twelve labors. And even then, Zeus only allowed it since Heracles was his favorite son and Prometheus agreed to tell him the mother of the child that would surpass him, Thetis, a sea nymph Zeus had long been enamored with. After that, Prometheus disappears from the legends. It's unclear where he goes, but after all he was willing to endure for man, it just felt right to have him as my first Greek Deity.
